FORCE

Feminists Organized to Resist, Create, and Empower

Founded in the 1990s by student activists, FORCE is an undergraduate-run feminist internship housed in the Women & Gender Student Space on the University of Arizona’s campus.

During Mayorga’s time as FORCE Co-Director, they were introduced to the political potential of zine-making by their supervisor who recalled her own history with founding MalintZINE, the subject of Mayorga’s master’s thesis. This political introduction to zine-making inspired what later became the overarching theme of FORCE’s fall programming: Craftivism. Whether Mayorga was facilitating discussions about craft-making as a feminist consciousness raising tool, supporting interns as they utilized craftivism for their “Sip n’ Bitch” programming, or turning a research paper into an archival, zine project (see photographs below), Mayorga has consistently examined the confluence of collective memory, spirituality, and activism. This foundation motivates Mayorga’s research of artivist projects as potential sites of resistance to colonial systems of representation.
